Scientists warn: cut emissions now to avoid climate tipping point Countries
need to act soon to cut carbon dioxide emissions if the worst impacts
of global warming are to be avoided, warned a panel of
scientists speaking at a meeting of the American Geophysical
Union. The group, which included EAS Professor Paul
Webster from Georgia Tech, said that Earth's climate system is
approaching tipping points that once breached may be irreversible and
unstoppable on a practical time scale. ( full story... )
Tech teaching high school students calculus via distance learning How do high schools provide advanced classes to one or two bright students who have completed all the math classes their high schools offer? Fulton & Cobb County Schools have found a solution — partnering with Georgia Tech to provide college-level calculus classes taught by Math professor Tom Morley via distance-learning technologies. Carbon nanosheets promise super-fast chips Atom-thick
sheets of a carbon compound called graphene should smash the record
for room-temperature conductivity. But at present it's hard to isolate pure layers of graphene suitable for industrial manufacture. Professor Walt de Heer at Georgia Tech & colleagues are working to overcome this problem. "We are able to 'grow' a canvas of material that has similar if not identical electrical properties" (full story...)
