FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Application Form | GTF Request for Grant Form
I. CoS-GTF SENIOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
(for leave of absence with pay)
- These grants ordinarily are for tenured faculty who have been at
Georgia Tech for at least five years.
-
Preference will be given to applicants who have not received a paid
leave of absence in the past five years.
-
The faculty member must visit other institutions for all or for a significant
part of the leave period.
-
Georgia Tech funds (unit and CoS funds) will pay for a maximum of half
salary for an academic year or full salary for a semester. Other funds
must come from external sources.
-
Preference will be given to applications in which sponsored funds can
be used thus reducing costs to Ga. Tech. The allowed salary not covered
by sponsored funds will be split between unit funds and CoS-GTF funds.
-
Leaves can be either for one semester or for fall and spring semesters
of the academic year. No leaves with pay are available during the summer
term.
-
Applications should include the GTF Request for Grant form, the CoS
Faculty Development Grant application (reverse side), a detailed budget page,
an updated vitae. The significance of the leave for both the faculty
member and for Georgia Tech should be explicitly stated.
- Faculty receiving grants are required to return to Georgia Tech for at least
one full year after the leave.
- After returning to campus, the faculty member must prepare a final report
describing the activities during the leave and the benefits to the faculty
member and Georgia Tech.
-
Awards will be made on a competitive basis. Criteria that may be used
are: (a) Judged significance of faculty development opportunity: (b)
Research productivity; (c) Funding history; and (d) Past leave experience.
-
After a leave of absence has been approved by the College, the faculty
member's home department should forward the proper paperwork to the Dean's
office so the leave can be approved by the Board of Regents.
-
The CoS Graduate and Research Committee will meet twice a year to consider
applications and make recommendations to the Dean. Deadlines for applications:
November 10, January 10, and May 10.

(for equipment, equipment repair or modification, graduate student support,
technical assistance, small research needs)
- Preference will be given to (a) non-tenured assistant professors;
and (b) tenured faculty who are pursuing NEW research directions.
-
Proposals generally should not request funds less than $3,000 or more
than $25,000, with the typical application in the $5,000 to $10,000
range.
- A short proposal (with CoS Faculty Development Grant application form) is
required (no more than three pages) providing justification for the potential
of the research, the need for funds, the impact of grant on the research productivity
and external funding of the applicant, and for tenured faculty, a clear indication
of how the research is a new direction from previous research by the faculty
member. An updated vitae should also be attached.
