Professor Houston comes to Georgia Tech from Cornell University, where he was the Peter J. W. Debye Professor of Chemistry from 1999-2007. While at Cornell, he also held positions as Chair of the Department of Chemistry (1997-2001) and Senior Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (2002-2005). His research interests include photodissociation dynamics, biomolecular collisions, development of product imaging, and exploration of biofilms. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973 and conducted postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley prior to joining the Cornell faculty as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in 1975. E. Kent Barefield | (404) 894-7532 |
Associate Dean, College of Sciences |
||
Professor Barefield holds a BS in Chemistry from Western Kentucky University (1965) and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1969). He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois before his appointment as Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1976. In the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, he was Associate Director for two appointments and Acting Director from 1989 to 1993. In 1995 he was appointed Associate Dean in the College of Sciences, and, in 2006, he was appointed Interim Dean. Barefield's research interests are in synthetic and mechanistic inorganic and organometallic chemistry. He is especially concerned with the synthesis of new materials including macrocyclic ligands and other chelating agents; the synthetic utility of reactions of coordinated ligands; stereochemistry of metal complexation reactions; the synthesis and reactivity of α-heteroatom substituted metal alkyls; and with the thermal mechanisms of gas generation in nuclear waste. Evans Harrell | (404) 894-0326 |
Associate Dean, College of Sciences |
||
Dr. Harrell is an Associate Dean of the College of Sciences and a Professor of Mathematics. He studied at Stanford and Princeton, where he earned his PhD in Physics in 1976 , working at the interface of mathematics and physics. Before coming to Georgia Tech from Johns Hopkins in 1983 he had a series of postdocs and teaching positions in the US and Europe. While at Georgia Tech he has received a Sloan Fellowship and an Eichholz Faculty Teaching Award. Before his appointment as Associate Dean in late 2005, he was an Associate Chair of the School of Mathematics. Harrell works on the Schrödinger equation, which describes nonrelativistic matter on the atomic scale, and on similar differential equations. He is interested in the transition between quantum and classical mechanics and in the influence of geometry on quantum mechanics. At times he proves theorems, while on other occasions he does applied mathematics in collaboration with scientists and engineers. Harrell is married to Charity Scott, who directs the Center for Law, Health & Society in the GSU Law School. They have two grown children, Peter and Constance. Email: |
